“None of the showers at the camp ground worked and bathrooms where nasty ”
“Loved this campground, bathrooms were clean. I had a very nice weekend here!”
“Nice campsite. Enjoyed the lake. Only a little trash on campsite from previous guests. Bathhouse was old and worn but OK. Leaking toilet supply line causing a puddle. Trash cans sparse around camp. Had to use dumpster?”

Lake Russell Recreation Area sits in the North Georgia portion of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest around a 100-acre reservoir where the cool mountain air and a grassy beach make summer days especially pleasant. The campground gives you direct access to swimming, a boat launch and a fishing dock on the lake, and borders the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area for additional shoreline and wildlife-viewing opportunities. Several local trails leave from or near the recreation area the Lady Slipper, Lake Russell Foot Trail, Rhododendron and Sourwood trails so hikers and mountain bikers can string together short loops or longer outings through mixed hardwood forests. If you want to expand your itinerary, nearby sights include Anna Ruby Falls, the Brasstown Bald recreation area (Georgia's highest point), the small town of Cornelia and the Chenocetah Fire Tower, and the wider Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest also offers things like horseback riding, OHV routes and overnight stays in some fire lookouts and cabins. The campground itself contains a total of 41 sites: 32 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 9 tent-only sites. Sites come equipped with a metal fire ring, picnic table and lantern hook; there are no electrical or water hookups, so RV campers should plan to be self-contained or make use of the campground's water hydrants and on-site dump station. Two paved loops make it easier to maneuver trailers and larger rigs, and the comfort station buildings offer flush toilets and showers. Beyond individual sites you'll find a picnic shelter and open areas for hanging out after a day on the water. The area is reached from north Georgia highways (north of Gainesville and just off Hwy 197 near Cornelia), and because fees, reservation policies and seasonal details can change, call the facility at (706) 754-6221 for current information and to confirm availability.
