Woodring Branch Campground sits on the western shore of Carters Lake in the North Georgia Mountains, about 70 miles north of Atlanta near Ellijay. The camping area is heavily wooded and offers many sites with direct or partial lake views across the reservoir's 3,200 surface acres and 62 miles of largely undeveloped shoreline. There are 42 campsites in total: 30 that accommodate both RVs and tent camping and 12 tent-only sites, with electric hookups available at many sites. Onsite services are straightforward and practical for extended stays flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a dump station, a children's playground, and a designated swimming area. Boaters will find two campground ramps (note: trailer parking at these ramps is limited), and an additional network of six ramps around the lake provides broader access for launching farther afield. Recreation at Woodring Branch takes full advantage of Carters Lake's clear water and foothill topography. The campground itself connects to two loop trails the 3.5-mile Amadahy Trail and the Oak Ridge Nature Trail rated easy to moderate and suitable for family hikes and mountain biking, with long stretches that open to lake views and varied plant and animal life. Boating is the draw here, whether you're running a powerboat, sailing, or paddling a canoe along the steep, rugged shoreline; anglers pursue a wide range of sport fish including largemouth and smallmouth bass (plus hybrids and striped/spotted varieties), crappie, walleye, bream and catfish, though shore fishing is limited by the terrain. Day-use picnic areas and other water-sport opportunities round out the activity list, and there are privately owned lodges and resort-style options in the surrounding area if you want alternatives to camping.
