Big Scrub Campground sits inside central Florida's Ocala National Forest amid the region's distinctive sand pine scrub part of the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi and the largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest in the world. The site accommodates a total of 46 campsites: 36 that will take both RVs and tents and 10 tent-only sites. Two designated full-hookup spots (Sites A and B) are charged at $12 + $10, for a total of $22 per night; other site fees vary, so make reservations or request refunds by calling the reservation line at (877) 444-6777. Facilities at the campground include showers, restrooms and potable drinking water, and the loop layout makes it straightforward to back an RV into site pads while leaving plenty of space for tent setups. Note that the location has limited staffing if you need general information about conditions or services call (352) 625-2520 before you arrive. What sets Big Scrub apart is immediate access to off-road riding: a trailhead inside the campground puts you onto the 47-mile Ocala Adventure Trail and the marked Tread Lightly Four Wheel Drive Way, so riders can go from campsite to trail without hauling gear to a separate staging area. Use of the trail system requires a permit, and riders should confirm rules and obtain permits ahead of time from the forest office or the forest service OHV information page. Beyond wheeled recreation, the campground is a short drive from Alexander Springs, where warm, clear spring water invites swimming, canoeing and diving in a spring-fed lake and creek. To reach Big Scrub from I-75, head east on State Road 40 and follow Forest Road 588 south for roughly eight miles the campground sits on the west side of the road allowing easy access to miles of sandy trails and wide open Florida sky.
