Alexander Springs Recreation Area sits in the Ocala National Forest where a broad, naturally sloping spring pool feeds Alexander Run; the spring is one of Florida's 27 first-magnitude springs and holds a steady 72°F with crystalline water and a sandy bottom that makes swimming, snorkeling and year-round diving especially easy to enjoy. The recreation area is the only place in the forest where scuba is permitted and certified divers will find clear visibility; non-divers can picnic on the banks, use the short interpretive boardwalk that winds over the spring and through palm trees, or drop a line from one of the fishing platforms along the Timucuan Trail. Canoes can be rented or you can bring your own to paddle Alexander Run into the Alexander Springs Wilderness, where hardwood swamp, forest and scrub habitats concentrate wildlife viewing opportunities expect to see turtles, deer, raccoons, alligators and numerous bird species in this floodplain forest of maples, sweetgum and cabbage palms. The campground itself contains four loops of sites within an easy walk of the swimming and picnic areas, with a total of 64 campsites; all 64 sites accommodate both RVs and tents and provide shaded, level parking pads, but there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups so RVs must be self-contained. Restrooms have flush toilets and showers, and a small on-site general store stocks basic camping necessities and firewood. Reservations may be modified or cancelled online or through the call center (a $10 service fee is withheld for any refund and late cancellations may be assessed), and refunds are not given for inclement weather for camping, gear rentals, or day-use fees. Alexander Springs is located in the northeast corner of Lake County on County Road 445 between Astor and Altoona, roughly a 40-mile drive east of Ocala; for facility-specific questions call (352) 669-3522.
