Wright Lake Campground sits on a quiet ridge within the Apalachicola Savannahs, roughly 25 miles inland from the Gulf along Florida's Forgotten Coast. The campground fronts a clear, spring-fed lake whose day-use areas offer swimming, picnicking and a short 0.2-mile loop trail that circles the water; a longer 4.6-mile trail nearby moves through several different ecosystems if you want a lengthier hike. The landscape here is open longleaf pine with wiregrass and occasional palmetto understorey, and swamps and savannahs thread the broader scenery. Boat and fishing access is a short drive to Hickory Landing and Owl Creek, where you can reach the Apalachicola River for sport fishing, paddling or longer outings; the recreation area itself is fairly level and easily walked, with lakeside picnic tables and grills scattered among the trees. A comfort station with flush toilets and warm showers serves the camping area. The campground offers 18 total campsites (18 RV sites) that include basic campsite amenities such as picnic tables, grills, tent pads and fire rings, making it a practical base for anglers, paddlers and families exploring the byway. The site layout and road access are straightforward you'll reach the recreation area by traveling south from Sumatra along State Road 65 and turning onto Wright Lake Road and the entrance kiosk marks the start of the loop to the campsites. Nearby attractions include the Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway for scenic drives and wildflower viewing, and historic Fort Gadsden with interpretive kiosks, trails and river access. Practical note: refunds cannot be processed on site; any cancellation or refund must be handled through Recreation.gov.
