“Sites are spaced well apart from each other, restrooms were clean, but some sites had challenges for leveling.”

Target Tree Campground sits at 7,643 feet on a south-facing slope above Thompson Park, shaded by a mix of Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak. The site takes its name from Ute use of the forest for sap and bark and from the scarred "target trees" left where the trees were used for target practice which you can see up close via a short, accessible interpretive trail in the campground. Birders will appreciate the sign that lists species commonly seen here, and the Narrow Gauge Trail starts inside the loop and climbs 3.4 miles to an old, narrow-gauge railroad grade (the rails were spaced just three feet apart to handle tight mountain turns). Day trips are straightforward: the campground lies on the north side of U.S. Highway 160 about 7 9 miles east of Mancos and roughly 20 miles west of Durango, making it a practical base for visits to Mesa Verde National Park (about 1 hour 45 minutes south) and numerous Four Corners-era archaeological sites in the region. Practical amenities are simple but serviceable: there are 19 sites in total 17 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 equestrian sites and many single-family sites meet accessibility standards and include a picnic table and campfire ring. A reservable group site holds up to 50 people and 10 vehicles and is set up for stock with two divided corrals; that group area contains two pull-through and four parallel RV sites. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Reservation and cancellation policies are strict: individual campsite cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival triggers a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations are fully forfeited if cancelled). Group-facility cancellations less than 14 days before arrival carry a $10 fee plus forfeiture of the first night. No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and lose the first night's rate; refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after checkout (credits go back to the original card, refunds by check for cash/check payments). The campground's combination of trail access, horse facilities, and proximity to archaeological and cultural sites makes it a practical choice for hikers, horse riders, birders and anyone looking to explore southwestern Colorado from a compact, forested camp.
