What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (45 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Peaceful, beautiful, and much solitude on our hikes. Campgrounds and vault toilets clean which is greatly appreciated! ”

Carol H 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful with super friendly vibe. Great trail off the campground for running dogs off-leash. Dirt roads are a bit of a challenge when arriving from the north. ”

Linden G 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Great campground. Bug spaces. Clean. Absolutely couldn’t have asked for anything better. Fell in love with the place. Little tricky to find Glass Mountain. But thanks to a forest service employee who came upon us on a forest road… we found it.! Oh My! ”

Alison C 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

About

Sitting at about 6,770 feet in the Medicine Lake Highlands of northeastern California, the Medicine Lake Recreation Area combines a high-elevation lakefront setting with the rough textures of recent volcanic terrain. Mature lodgepole pines line much of the shoreline and offer shade and shelter, though the basin can be windy at times; a short trail from the recreation area leads onto the Medicine Lake Lava Flow, and Glass Mountain and the Burnt Lava Flow geologic areas are within a 15-minute drive. The lake itself supports boating from a concrete boat ramp and dock in the day-use area, and there's a designated swimming section beside the picnic area for warming up after a paddle. Trails that start here serve hikers and mountain bikers, including the longer route up Little Mount Hoffman, and anglers will find regular use of the water for fishing. If you want to explore further afield, Lava Beds National Monument with its caves is about a half-hour drive and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge good for migratory waterfowl viewing is within roughly an hour. Campsites are distributed among four campgrounds and total 75 campsites 75 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites so the area accommodates everything from compact, somewhat rugged sites with limited parking to larger spots suited to recreational vehicles. The loop breakdown is A.H. Hogue Campground: 24 sites, Headquarters Campground: 10 sites, Hemlock Campground: 19 sites, and Medicine Campground: 22 sites. Standard site amenities include a picnic table, fire ring and barbeque grill; campground facilities include vault toilets, water hydrants and garbage dumpsters. Fifteen of the sites, located in the Medicine and A.H. Hogue campgrounds, are available for advanced reservations; for current fees, seasonal openings or closures, and specific access conditions (this area is reached via Forest Service roads from towns like McCloud or Tulelake), contact the Modoc National Forest/Forest Service before you go.
