Marion Mountain Campground sits at about 6,400 feet in the San Bernardino National Forest among mature cedar and pine, where trees give most sites a sense of separation and shade. The site is small there are 16 campsites in total: 15 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 1 tent-only site sized for tent and small RV/van camping rather than large rigs. Each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill, and vault toilets serve the loop; potable water and electrical or sewer hookups are not listed, so plan to bring your own water and power. Within the campground you'll find sport-climbing routes on exposed rock, and access to the Marion Mountain Trail, an 11.8-mile route that is the shortest but often strenuous way up to San Jacinto Peak; from the high country you can see across the desert to the ocean and over the San Bernardino and San Gabriel ranges on a clear day, while shorter and less demanding walks are available on nearby forest trails. Practical access is by way of Highway 243 from the I-10 corridor roughly 50 miles from San Bernardino and about seven miles north of the mountain town of Idyllwild follow forest roads for the final few miles. Because the Forest Service is currently proposing fee changes across the San Bernardino National Forest, check the Forest's site (https://www.fs.usda.gov/sbnf) for current fees, reservation options, seasonal openings, and road or snow closures before you go; that page is also where the Forest is accepting public comments on the fee proposal. Expect a quiet, low-capacity campground geared toward hikers, climbers, and people looking to explore the broader recreation opportunities of the San Bernardino National Forest biking, fishing, horseback riding, OHV use, wildlife viewing and winter sports are all available somewhere in the forest but confirm current fire restrictions and site availability ahead of your trip.
