“Great camping spot close to idyllwild. Ideal for tent campers, as the loops are pretty small. The bathrooms are vault toilet but clean and the spot we had was close to the water spigot. Fern Basin is perfect for a quick overnight. ”

Fern Basin Campground sits at about 6,300 feet in a mixed oak and conifer pocket of the San Bernardino National Forest, a quiet mountain base above the desert. The loop holds 15 campsites all configured to accommodate both tents and small RVs/vans each outfitted with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets are available, but potable water is currently not available due to an unanticipated leak in the water distribution system; bring ample water for drinking and cooking. Access is via State Route 243 north of Idyllwild and a short Forest Service road (4S02), and the site is roughly 50 miles southeast of the city of San Bernardino and about seven miles north of Idyllwild, where you'll find shops and restaurants if you need supplies. The campground is a straightforward jumping-off point for hiking and nature viewing: the Marion Mountain Trail (11.8 miles one way) begins nearby and is the shortest though strenuous route to San Jacinto Peak, with clear-day panoramas that can reach the ocean, Palm Desert, and the San Bernardino and San Gabriel ranges. Beyond that trail, the broader San Bernardino National Forest supports a wide range of activities biking, climbing, fishing, horseback riding and horse camping, hunting, OHV use, interpretive programs, swimming, winter sports and wildlife viewing but services at Fern Basin itself are limited to primitive campground amenities. The forest is currently soliciting public comment on a proposal to modify fees at various sites; for the latest information on fees, reservations, seasonal availability and to submit comments, check the San Bernardino National Forest page at https://www.fs.usda.gov/sbnf.
