Rose Canyon Campground sits high on the slopes of the Santa Catalina Mountains about 17 miles northeast of Tucson, accessed on the Catalina Highway/Arizona Route 39 between mile markers 17 and 18 near the Mt. Lemmon corridor. At roughly 7,000 feet elevation the site is noticeably cooler than the desert below and is shaded by stands of large ponderosa pine and clusters of Gambel oak; during the summer monsoon Rose Creek runs through the site to feed the six-acre Rose Canyon Lake. The lake is sheltered by trees and has a one-mile trail that circles the water, with access from the lower parking area to a floating dock near the dam an easy walk for anglers and hikers. Rose Canyon is used for both day visits and overnight stays: anglers can try their luck for stocked trout from shore or the dock, trails in the surrounding Coronado National Forest open into longer hikes and mountain-bike routes that climb toward the 9,157-foot summit of Mt. Lemmon, and wildlife viewing is common in the cooler, higher-elevation woods. Facilities are straightforward and oriented to family camping and group day use. The campground offers 31 total campsites 24 tent-only sites, six RV sites, and one site configured to accommodate either an RV or a tent plus spacious single-family layouts and two reservable group day-use picnic areas with shelters that can accommodate up to 120 guests. Each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; vault toilets are available on site. Group site fees are charged per day: up to 50 persons $95; 51 90 persons $130; 91 120 persons $150. Because seasonal conditions and reservation rules can change, call the facility for the most current information and to make group reservations at (520) 576-1325. The Catalina Highway itself is a major draw a scenic paved route to the upper ranges and nearby attractions include Saguaro National Park, Sabino Canyon and Colossal Cave for additional day-trip options.
