Dr bruce S ★ 5 · Sep 2025Thanks Roger and Loretta… enjoyed it
Gregory M ★ 5 · Sep 2025This is a great spot because unlike others it is actually monitored. At Spencer canyon they forget you are there after sundown and it shows when there are issues with large parties. Here there are always large parties but they are checked by the host and rules are enforced so it is much more pleasant for all. Don’t come here if you want to have a free for all. Do come here if you are good with the rules and love a quiet and well equipped campground.
Anna M ★ 5 · Jul 2025Love the campground. Great amount of space and wonderful for large groups with kids. The camp host was wonderfully helpful and friendly. Loved the Ramada with electrical since there were no fires this but a power helped for cooking food and having a theater night for the kiddos. Can’t wait to book it again next year!

Whitetail Campground sits high on the slopes of the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Coronado National Forest, about 30 miles north of Tucson on Catalina Highway (the Sky Island Scenic Byway) and roughly five miles south of the small summit town of Summerhaven. At about 8,000 feet elevation the site is noticeably cooler than the desert below and shaded by stands of big ponderosa pines; campsites are roomy and spaced out to give groups a sense of privacy. The campground consists of five group areas (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 5), and all five are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, making them useful for mixed groups who want to camp together. Each group area has a covered picnic shelter sized to serve between 40 and 90 people and is equipped with drinking water, limited electricity intended for small appliances only, vault toilets, and trash collection; the facility is available for either day use or overnight stays. Outdoor options center on hiking and wildlife watching: numerous trails climb toward and onto Mt. Lemmon (which reaches 9,157 feet), and the forest's "sky island" geography supports a range of plant and animal life to observe. The University of Arizona operates an observatory nearby, and Summerhaven only a few minutes' drive from the campground offers basic services and attractions at the mountain summit. Anglers can try for stocked trout at Rose Canyon Lake, and the drive up Catalina Highway is the only paved access to the upper range, making it a convenient base for scenic day trips to Saguaro National Park, Sabino Canyon, or Colossal Cave. Practical considerations: because listings do not identify full RV hookups beyond small-appliance electricity, larger RV groups should confirm site specifications before arrival, and seasonal road or weather conditions at this elevation can affect access check Coronado National Forest or recreation.gov for current fees, reservations, and travel advisories.
