Springhill Park sits on the Arkansas side of John Paul Hammerschmidt Lake where the river widens behind the James W. Trimble Lock and Dam. Campsites thread the lakeshore and the small creek bottoms beyond some sites back up to open views of the water, others tuck between the lake and Massard Creek amid bottomland hardwoods and the rolling, agricultural fields and bluffs that define this stretch of the river. The campground contains 50 sites in total: 45 are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and five are tent-only. Sites are grouped into three numbered loops Loop A with 15 sites, Loop B with 27 sites, and Loop E with 3 sites with the remaining tent sites located nearby. Modern amenities at Springhill include electric hookups at many sites, showers, a dump station, drinking water, and boat launching ramps; four large group picnic shelters, a playground, and mapped trails give options for day use and family gatherings. From Barling, the park is just north along Arkansas State Route 59, making it an easy out-and-back for visitors based in the Fort Smith area. Recreation at Springhill is strongly influenced by the river and by an active trail community. A 10-mile Springhill Mountain Bike Trail runs out of the park; built for speed and designated a National Recreation Trail, it attracts experienced riders and local races. The lake itself supports year-round fishing for catfish, bream, crappie and both white and largemouth bass, and the tailwaters below the dam are noted for sauger fishing from late fall through early spring. Boating and broader water sports are centered on the park's ramps, while picnic shelters, a playground and frequent wildlife sightings along the shore make it practical for families and birders. For detailed layout and to plan a visit, download the Springhill park map (https://cdn.recreation.gov/public/2021/07/14/18/11/232710_7158bb20-1517-4e7e-beea-a74ebd713384.pdf) and check the managing agency's site for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal information; the Fort Smith Museum of History sits about 20 minutes away for a cultural stop after a day on the water or trail.
