Clear Creek Recreation Area sits on the shore of Lewis Smith (Smith) Lake in Winston County, about a dozen miles north of Jasper off County Road 27, and functions as the Bankhead National Forest's primary developed lake access. The campground and day-use complex put you a short walk or bike ride from water: a year-round boat launch with trailer parking and an SST vault toilet, a swim beach served by a bathhouse, and fishing for largemouth and hybrid/striped bass and crappie on Smith Lake. Trails thread the day-use area a paved 1.5-mile bicycle path links the campground to picnic areas and two 50-person pavilions, while the 2.5-mile Raven Cliffs interpretive trail winds through forest and overlooks; summer interpretive programs add seasonal programming. The broader Bankhead National Forest and nearby Sipsey Wilderness diversify the experience with waterfalls, sandstone cliffs and miles of backcountry where birding, auto touring and, in other parts of the forest, horseback riding and horse camping are available. Campground facilities are substantial and built for mixed use: there are 83 total campsites (81 that accept both RVs and tents, plus 2 tent-only sites) arranged in five named loops Acorn (1), Bent Twig (1), Fawn (22), Fox (33) and Hoot Owl (26) all with paved parking spurs, level sites, picnic tables, grills, lantern posts and fire rings. Most sites offer water and both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service; each loop has a bathhouse with flush toilets and showers, and there's a trailer dump station elsewhere in the recreation area. Two group tent areas (by reservation only) hold up to 25 campers each and share a bathhouse. Practical rules to note: check-in is no earlier than 2:00 p.m. and check-out by 12:00 p.m., there are no trash dumpsters inside the loops (pack trash to the dumpsters by the dump station), and many services campsite and pavilion reservations and payment are handled through Recreation.gov (the mobile app is supported). Onsite recreation includes a swim beach, boat access, a basketball and volleyball court and horseshoe pit; facilities are wheelchair accessible and drinking water is provided.
