“I stayed late in the season at the campground. The site was surrounded by trees and was well maintained. The hook ups (electric and water) were excellent; no problems with pressure or power surges. Great camp hosts. ”
“If arriving on the ferry make sure they give you a gate code if they keep closing the gate at 10pm. ”
“Campground hosts Brendan and Abby are stellar. Sites are beautiful. Bear boxes are a great addition. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to close access to town but is still deep in the woods. ”

Mendenhall Campground sits on the shore of Mendenhall Lake about 13 miles from downtown Juneau, with a clear view north to Mendenhall Glacier and the Mendenhall River flowing on the east side of the site. The area around the campground is relatively flat at roughly 100 feet elevation, shaped by glacial moraines and dotted with small ponds, blueberry bushes, mosses and a mix of black cottonwood, Sitka alder, willow and mature spruce-hemlock forest. The campground provides 70 sites in total: 53 that can accommodate both RVs and tents, 10 RV-only sites and 7 tent-only sites. Each site includes a picnic table, tent pad and a combination fire ring with grill; water faucets, accessible vault toilets, two accessible flush toilets with shower facilities, a dump station and an on-site trash dumpster are also provided. A small walk-to backpacker area is available and many sites are accessible to users with mobility needs. The campground is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day; confirm current fees and reservation rules with the Tongass National Forest or Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center before you go. Hiking and wildlife viewing are the main draws here. The West Glacier Trail starting roughly a half mile from the campground entrance via road or the Aak'w Sit' Trail climbs about 1,300 feet and typically takes 5 6 hours roundtrip; shorter nearby options include the 0.4-mile Tolch Rock Trail and, accessed from the Visitor Center area, the Nugget Falls (1.7 miles), Moraine Ecology (1.5 miles) and Trail of Time (0.7 mile). Outfitters based in the area can arrange activities off-site such as river rafting, glacier helicopter trips and bicycle rentals, and the forest around you supports eagles, bears and spawning salmon among other wildlife. The campground's lakeside location makes boating and fishing logical options, and the wider Tongass National Forest offers a long list of recreational choices from auto touring and interpretive programs to winter sports so plan extra time if you want to combine a campsite stay with guided trips or a Visitor Center visit.
