Dalton Highway Milepost 180
Open in Google Maps ↗
Marion Creek Campground sits on the south side of the Brooks Range in the Middle Fork Koyukuk River valley at mile 180 of the Dalton Highway, roughly five miles north of the small service stop at Coldfoot. The site offers wide views of the range and an easy walk to Marion Creek and the undeveloped trail that leads toward Marion Creek Falls. The campground contains 26 sites, each advertised to accommodate both tents and RVs, and the roadways and pads are gravel. You'll find basic but useful amenities: potable water, vault toilets, trash receptacles, a fire ring and picnic table at every site, a camp host on duty, and firewood for sale. There is no electricity and no dump station. The campground is open mid-May through mid-September, operates on a first-come, first-serve basis only, and charges $10 per night; visitors must physically arrive to claim a site and then pay on site by scanning the Recreation.gov QR code (download the Recreation.gov app on your phone before you arrive, since cellular service is limited here). For local information call (907) 678-5209 or (907) 474-2200. The Marion Creek area is a strong basecamp for backcountry hiking, wildlife viewing and river trips. Trails and off-highway routes climb quickly into ridges and tundra, with hiking eastward leading toward the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and westward toward Gates of the Arctic; carry topographic maps, a compass and GPS, let someone know your plans, and bring bear deterrent. Recreational options along the Dalton include fishing, birdwatching, bicycling, and regulated gold panning on some federal stream segments south of Atigun Pass (note: panning is prohibited in the pipeline right-of-way and suction dredging is banned). River trips range from easy runs on the Jim and Middle Fork Koyukuk (Class I II) to expert whitewater on Atigun and the Sagavanirktok farther north. Practical preparation is essential for travel on the Dalton Highway: the road is mostly gravel, narrow and prone to dust, potholes and changing conditions, truck traffic is common, and cell coverage is spotty check 511.alaska.gov before you go, carry spare tires and oil, and consider a CB radio on channel 19. Pack out everything you pack in (BLM already hauls roughly 20 tons of roadside litter out annually), and stop in Coldfoot or the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center for current conditions, interpretive exhibits and up-to-date backcountry information.
