Robert W. Craig Campground sits just off West Virginia Route 46, about five miles from the small town of Elk Garden and reached from Cumberland, MD via US-220 and the WV-42/46 corridor. The campground sits alongside Jennings Randolph Lake a 952-acre reservoir set within roughly 4,500 acres of public land and water and gives you direct access to the lake's wide range of activities: boating, water skiing, kayaking, swimming and shoreline fishing, plus hunting and wildlife viewing. Hikers and birders can step onto the Sunset Trail, the Songbird Trail or the High Timber Trail (where 28 tree species are labeled), and the 3D archery trail has its range with a trailhead adjacent to the pavilion. Anglers will also find Kalbaugh Pond behind the campground store stocked with largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill and catfish, and the North Branch of the Potomac about a mile away is famous for trout fishing and offers whitewater rafting; the city of Cumberland is a short drive for restaurants and shops. Keep an eye out overhead: resident bald eagles have been breeding here for more than a decade, so bring binoculars if eagle-watching is on your list. The campground's practical side is straightforward and RV-friendly: there are 66 campsites in total, 65 that accept both RVs and tents and one that is tent-only, and many electric sites provide up to 50-amp service. A centrally located pavilion (30 by 40 feet) gives groups shelter with lights, electrical outlets, running water and about nine picnic tables, and a handicap-accessible portable toilet sits nearby. The front loop houses a shower building and full bathrooms; the back loop has bathrooms without showers. You'll check in at the entrance station before using the water fill-up located there, and a dump station is available near the exit for emptying camper tanks before departure. Families will appreciate the playground, sandbox and swing set, plus horseshoe pits and a basketball court by the pavilion, while trailheads from the campground put hiking and the 3D archery range right at your doorstep.
