Bernard Z ★ 5 · Oct 2025Excellent campground. Big level sites. Free showers. Electric. Nice swimming lake. Hiking. Beautiful trees everywhere. A little off beaten patch but worth it. Only issue is dump station has no water pressure to flush your black tank. Hose is there. Just a trickle of water. Overall great campground.
Timothy B ★ 5 · Oct 2025The facilities were clean and operating as designed. The Camp host was friendly and helpful. The trails were great to hike and the park is very close to the Blue Ridge parkway which was a beautiful drive and had some great trails off of it as well. I hope to return in the future.
Mary J S ★ 4 · Oct 2025This was just an overnight stop.

Perched at roughly 1,800 feet in the shadow of Torry Ridge, Sherando Lake Recreation Area's Family Campground is centered between two clear, spring-fed lakes that shape much of the visitor experience. The lower lake is 25 acres with a sandy beach, a designated swimming area with an accessible ramp, and a beach bathhouse with changing and shower facilities; outside the swim zone, anglers and paddlers share cool water that's kept pleasant by springs and Williams Branch. Motorized boats with gasoline engines are not permitted on the lower lake electric trolling motors, canoes, kayaks and similar hand-carried craft only and a hand-carry ramp sits adjacent to the lower-lake parking. The upper lake is a quieter, 7-acre fishing-only pond fed by the North Fork of Back Creek; it is stocked for trout in spring and fall but has no swim access and only hand-carry boat launch via a short walking trail below the group camp area. Hikers have options from a short lakeside loop to full days on White Rock Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway or longer routes that climb via the Blue Loop and Torry Ridge Trail toward Bald Mountain. Beyond the recreation area, the Blue Ridge Parkway is only a few miles away, Wintergreen Resort's ski and golf facilities sit within about 10 miles, and Stuarts Draft with groceries, gas and other supplies is roughly a 15-minute drive. The campground contains 65 sites in all, and every site is designated for both RVs and tents; the three loops are arranged to match different rigs and camping styles. Meadow Loop (Loop C) has 18 electric sites and River Bend Loop (Loop B) has 13 electric sites, both suited to larger units and RVs; White Oak Loop (Loop A) contains 34 non-electric sites intended for tents and camping units less than 20 feet long. Each campsite includes a picnic table, serving table, lantern post and a campfire ring with grill, and tent pads are covered with a fine brown sandy gravel. Showers, flush toilets and drinking water hydrants (note: hydrants are not threaded for hoses) are located in every loop; a trailer dump station and a potable fill station with a threaded hose are signed along the main road (the fill station sits opposite the day-use parking near the Williams Branch picnic area restroom). Because black bears are active in the area, most sites provide food-storage lockers and it is mandatory to secure food in lockers or locked vehicles violations can result in fines. All camping requires a reservation in advance (no first-come, first-serve sites); reserve through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. If the gatehouse is closed at arrival, drive on to your assigned loop (White Oak is the first right after the lower lake; Meadow is the last loop on the left before the playground) and seek out the campground host for assistance. For visit planning, remember fishing requires the appropriate Virginia license plus the National Forest stamp and trout stamp when applicable, and the Sherando Lake Visitor Center sells ice during seasonal hours.
