“Great group site with plenty of parking. It was nice to have several picnic tables and the shade structure over the tables. ”
“Really great space, the only issue was the noise with the ATV's. Otherwise, it would have received 5 stars. It had clean pit toilets, but no other amenities.”

Sand Flats Recreation Area sits on a high plain of slickrock domes, bowls and fins just east of Moab, with the 13,000-foot La Sal Mountains rising on the horizon. The group campsites are about five miles from downtown Moab along Sand Flats Road (the entrance station is roughly at 3000 Sand Flats Rd and is reached from Highway 191 via 400 East/Mill Creek Drive), giving quick access to the Slickrock and Porcupine Rim bike trails, nearly 40 miles of off-highway vehicle routes, and short drives to Arches and Canyonlands. Expect sparse pinyon and juniper for limited shade, wide views of sandstone domes and mesas, frequent coyote calls after dark, and a very dark, star-filled sky. The Sand Flats Recreation Area is managed through a partnership between Grand County and the Bureau of Land Management and is primarily used for auto touring, biking, camping and hiking. There are six reservable group campsites (all configured for both RVs and tents) split between the Datura and Echo campgrounds; each site can host up to 16 people. Datura A, B and D and Echo E-1 are the largest, with parking space for about six passenger cars or two to three RVs or trucks with trailers; Datura C and Echo E-10 have smaller parking areas sized for roughly four cars or one RV plus one truck with trailer. Each group site includes a shade structure, picnic table and fire ring, and vault toilets are nearby, but you must bring your own drinking water and either bring or buy firewood in town (wood collecting is prohibited). Group sites are reservable on Recreation.gov; other camping in Sand Flats is first-come, first-served at $15 per night per vehicle. Day-use passes are $10 for a private vehicle (seven days), $5 for bicycle or motorcycle (seven days), or $25 for an annual pass that admits the cardholder and passengers in a single private vehicle; National Park and Utah State Park passes are not accepted except for the Federal Recreational Lands Access Pass. Note the no-show rule: if you do not arrive by 11:00 a.m. on the day after your scheduled arrival, the site will be released.
