Cagle Recreation Area sits on the west fork of the San Jacinto River along the forested shoreline of 22,000-acre Lake Conroe, about an hour north of Houston near New Waverly off FM 1375. The campground is set among large pines and mixed hardwoods, with thousands of wildflowers in season and a vivid spring display when redbuds bloom in mid-February followed by dogwoods in early March. Lake Conroe draws anglers year-round black bass are a particular attraction and the facility's boat ramp and large launch parking make access easy for fishing and boating. Note that swimming is not allowed here, but shoreline wading, picnicking, birdwatching (the lake and surrounding forest provide wintering habitat for endangered bald eagles), hiking and mountain biking are all available; within the site a 2-mile Cagle Trail offers a short loop for hikers and cyclists, while the broader Sam Houston National Forest nearby contains about 85 miles of off-road vehicle, equestrian and mountain-bike trails and a segment of the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail. The campground has 47 sites total, each listed as suitable for both RVs and tents, and the sites with full-service hookups are arranged in two lakeside loops. Amenities include restrooms with flush toilets, sinks and hot showers; a picnic area that looks out over the water; and the aforementioned boat ramp and parking. Temperatures are moderate to cool from September through May and hot and humid in summer, with cool, wet winters plan accordingly for heat and humidity if you visit June August. The published fee is $30.00 per night (a $20 use fee plus a $10 full-hookup fee).
