“Ratcliff Lake is fast becoming one of my favorite places to camp. Not too close to any metropolitan areas, but close enough to a couple of towns in case anything needs to be picked up.”

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area sits within the Davy Crockett National Forest's loblolly pine and mixed hardwoods, surrounding a 45-acre lake that began life as a log pond and water source for the Central Coal and Coke Company sawmill in the early 20th century; the Civilian Conservation Corps developed the facility in 1936. The forest itself covers roughly 160,000 acres across Houston and Trinity counties within the Neches and Trinity River basins, and Ratcliff is a good base for exploring those woodlands the Big Slough Wilderness Area lies about five miles north along the Neches River for those seeking true solitude. Onsite trails deliver a range of options: a 1.5-mile Tall Pines loop and the shorter 0.75-mile Trail Tamers depart from the area, while the 20-mile Four C trail threads various forest types to a scenic overlook. Wildlife sightings are common amid the pines and oaks, including the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, and the lake and shoreline habitats support anglers and birders alike. The recreation area is open year-round and provides 58 campsites in a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served options: 25 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 33 tent-only sites. Those 58 sites are distributed across recognizable loops Dogwood Loop (25 sites), Lakeside Loop (12), Loblolly Loop (11), Sawmill (6), plus two small group or spur areas labeled FS 520 (2) and Day Use (2) and Dogwood Loop is the section with electrical hookups and can accommodate vehicles up to 50 feet. Amenities include flush toilets, hot and cold showers, trash bins, two reservable picnic shelters and a reservable amphitheater; the day-use area has 17 single-family picnic units, a designated swimming area and playground (no lifeguard on duty), two wooden fishing piers, an earthen pier, a fishing platform and a boat ramp. Anglers fish for largemouth bass, bream and channel/blue catfish (only electric motors are allowed on the lake), and hunting occurs on the broader national forest for species like deer, turkey and squirrel. Practical notes: camping is available year-round, some sites can be reserved ahead of time while others are walk-up, and standard electric sites carry an additional $5.00 per night hookup fee.
