About

Boles Field sits in the northern reaches of Sabine National Forest in eastern Texas, a short drive south of Shelbyville and just a few miles from the Louisiana line. The campground occupies a mix of pine and hardwood stands and is set near the Toledo Bend Reservoir roughly six miles from the water making it a handy base for anglers, boaters and swimmers who come for the reservoir's extensive shoreline. The site also has an unusual piece of local history: a fox hound cemetery dating to the turn of the 20th century where several well-known hunting dogs are buried, and the surrounding forest is good habitat for wildlife and spring migrants such as warblers and vireos, so birding and general wildlife viewing are popular in season. There are 22 campsites in total: 14 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 6 equestrian sites, and 2 tent-only sites; the campground offers water and electric hookups and permits horses on site. Campsites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis (camping fee $6, 14-day limit; sites allow up to two tents and eight people). Boles Field was developed to host larger gatherings as well a day-use amphitheater seats about 100 and a group shelter is available for family events (both are day-use only and may be reserved through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777). Beyond basic camping and RV access, the area supports horseback riding and horse camping on equestrian sites, hiking and mountain biking on forest roads and trails, OHV recreation in designated forest areas, picnicking and, of course, boating and fishing at nearby Toledo Bend.
