Double Lake Recreation Area sits in rolling hardwood-and-pine hills on the shore of the 23-acre Double Lake, a compact but varied spot created in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The campground offers 45 developed sites: 28 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 5 RV-only sites and 12 tent-only sites, along with separate group camping units and family camping areas. Facilities are straightforward and useful picnic units and a covered picnic shelter for gatherings, a concession stand with an attached bathhouse, and a sandy beach with a designated swimming area all arranged close enough to the water that shoreline views are a short walk from most sites. Temperatures run moderate to cool from September through May and turn hot and humid in June through August, with winters tending toward cool and wet; the site is accessed from Highway 150 about 22 miles east of New Waverly, then a short turn south on FM 2025. The lake is actively managed for anglers and is stocked with bass, bream and catfish; anglers can use any of three fishing piers or launch from a limited-access boat ramp (there's nearby parking for trailers), but only small electric motors are permitted on the water. Seasonal boat and canoe rentals make it easy to get out on the lake without bringing your own craft. For land-based recreation, a 5-mile hiking route links Double Lake to the Big Creek Scenic Area and there is trail access onto the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, while a roughly 20-mile mountain bike loop circles the lake. The national forest around Double Lake supports a wider array of activities biking, horseback riding and horse camping, off-highway vehicle use, picnicking and RV camping among them though rules and access can vary by trail and season, so check current fees, reservation policies and use restrictions with the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas before you go.
