Buck Hall Recreation Area sits at sea level on the Intracoastal Waterway inside the Francis Marion National Forest, a grassy, open campground with very few trees and limited shade bring a canopy if you need more cover. The area offers 19 campsites in all: 14 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 5 tent-only sites. Many visitors come prepared for serious fishing and boating: sites have full hookups, each space is outfitted with a picnic table, lantern post and a campfire ring with grill, and the recreation area provides accessible flush toilets, showers and drinking water. The large picnic area includes tables, grills, an accessible walkway and fish-cleaning stations; there is a lighted parking area and a boat ramp on site, and busy Intracoastal boat traffic from fishing skiffs to very large pleasure boats is a constant part of the setting. The campground lies about 30 miles northeast of Charleston along U.S. 17, reachable by the Buck Hall Landing Road turnoff, and is convenient for day trips to the coast or trips into the city. Fishing and shrimp baiting are the main draws here: anglers target a wide variety of species (bass, flounder, sea trout, snapper, mackerel, swordfish, crab, shrimp, clams and oysters among them), and Bulls Bay and nearby Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge some 65,000 acres of marsh, tidal creeks and beaches are within easy reach for additional coastal exploration. Boating and ocean sailing are supported by the on-site ramp, and a long stretch of the Palmetto Trail starts here, offering mostly unpaved hiking, biking and horseback-riding opportunities (note that a few sections of the trail are restricted to foot traffic only). Because the recreation area is part of the national forest system, a broader range of forest activities is available nearby, but the campground itself is best suited to anglers, boaters and trail users. Given the limited number of sites and the popularity of the area, reservations are recommended; a non-refundable reservation fee applies ($8 for telephone bookings, $6 for website bookings). Cancellation rules: cancelling up to two days before arrival incurs a $10 cancellation fee in addition to the non-refundable reservation fee; a cancellation the day before or on the day of arrival incurs a $10 cancellation fee and forfeits the first night's use fee (not to exceed the total paid). For single-night reservations, a cancellation will forfeit the entire use fee but no cancellation fee will apply. Non-refundable reservation fees still apply.
