Shenango Recreation Area sits in the broad, slow valleys carved by the Shenango River and Pymatuning Creek, just northeast of Sharon, PA and roughly twenty miles east of Youngstown, OH. The campground occupies a lakeshore landscape of northern hardwoods maple, beech, black cherry and hemlock that shades more than 11,000 acres of shallow reservoir and 11 miles of river corridor. Campers will find 328 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, many with electric hookups; the campground's named loops include Lake (24 sites), Main (12 sites) and Oduc (34 sites). Facilities are practical and family-oriented: flush toilets, drinking water, hot showers, a dump station, playgrounds, a horseshoe pit and a boat ramp are on site, and the Lakeside Picnic Shelter can be reserved for reunions or larger gatherings. The recreation area address is 492 West Lake Road, Transfer, PA, and the park is easily reached from I-80 via Route 18. The lake is an active boating and angling destination an unlimited-horsepower lake with six free public launches and anglers chase bass, walleye, muskellunge and a variety of panfish; note that water levels are shallow and commonly fall through the summer, especially after early July, which can affect launching. A half-mile Coonie Trail offers a short, self-guided interpretive loop through local habitats, while longer options include the 7.5-mile Shenango Hiking Trail and the 7.5-mile Shenango Water Trail for paddlers (PFDs required). Nearby points of interest include the historic Kidds Mill Covered Bridge and remnants of the Erie Extension Canal and Lock Number 10 below the dam, restoration chestnut orchards run with the American Chestnut Foundation, and recreation extras from Bayview ORV trails (about 3.5 miles) to a 3-mile swim beach (no lifeguard) and a 5-mile paved Trout Island Trail for cycling and running; boat rentals and an ADA fishing pier are available in Clark about 1.4 miles away. The campground is reservation-only (same-day reservations are allowed); only credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) are accepted for payment. Be aware of the reservation and cancellation rules: a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations, a no-show may incur a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of use fees, and cancellations made the day before or day of arrival forfeit the first night's use fee (single-night cancellations forfeit the entire use fee, but the $10 service fee may not apply in that specific case).
