LePage Park sits where the John Day meets the Columbia, a wide, grassy river basin edged with mature shade trees and open views of the water. It's about a 30-mile drive east from The Dalles on I-84, with signs guiding you toward the John Day River; the park itself is roughly five miles from Rufus and the John Day Dam. The river defines the experience here: a boat ramp at the campground gives direct access for water skiing, sail-boarding and day trips on Lake Umatilla, and anglers commonly target smallmouth bass, catfish and plentiful sunfish. Trails and shoreline edges invite short hikes and wildlife viewing mule deer, waterfowl and raptors are frequent sightings and family groups can use picnic areas and a playground for daytime recreation. The campground contains 40 total sites, with 20 configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 20 reserved for tent camping only, spread across an open, shaded park setting. Facilities on site include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water, and a dump station, plus direct river access via the ramp; the broader John Day Lock and Dam area also supports boating, fishing, hiking and other concessioned recreation. Fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are not listed here, so plan to contact the park or the John Day Dam recreation office (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) before arriving to confirm current rates, campsite reservations and any access notices.
