What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (4 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Camp host was very knowledgeable and friendly. The campground was in great condition and was quite scenic. Enjoyed our visit. However, the self pay system has a flaw, we could only book 1 nite at a time, thus since we stayed 3 nights, we had to pay the service fee 3 times. ”

About

Page Springs Campground sits at the foot of Steens Mountain, about three miles from the small community of Frenchglen, with 32 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents beneath a scattering of cottonwood and juniper. The campground is open year-round and functions as the trailhead for two easy hikes: the Blitzen River Trail, which follows the Donner und Blitzen River for about four miles, and the one-mile Wilderness Nature Trail that climbs to a bluff-top loop with valley views. Facilities are straightforward and practical multiple vault restrooms, drinking water, trash cans, and a large covered picnic area available for no-fee day use and a payment kiosk sits near the entrance; camping is first-come, first-served only (no reservations), sites must be occupied before you pay, and fees are $16 per vehicle per night with an additional $5 per extra passenger vehicle. Payment accepts cash or check and electronic options (Scan-and-Pay via the Recreation.gov mobile app and a remote automated kiosk); for campground-specific questions call (541) 573-4400. Page Springs is part of the larger Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area, a roughly 500,000-acre mix of public and private lands accessed by the 52-mile Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway. From Page Springs you're well positioned to explore river fishing, wildlife viewing, historic sites like the Riddle Brothers Ranch, and the overlooks at Kiger Gorge, East Rim and Little Blitzen Gorge, but plan on self-reliance: services such as fuel, reliable drinking water outside the campground, restrooms, and cell reception are sparse and spread far apart. Many roads in the CMPA are rough and primitive high clearance or 4x4 vehicles and good tires are recommended and you should carry a current BLM map, obey road-closure signs, and stay on designated open routes; some areas are privately owned and require permission to enter.
