Lazy Bend Campground sits along the Wild and Scenic Clackamas River about 10 miles east of Estacada on Highway 224, at roughly 800 feet elevation where the highway runs close to the water through a dense stand of trees and huckleberry patches. The site is currently closed following the 2020 Riverside Wildfire; visitors should contact the Mt. Hood National Forest or check recreation.gov for the latest reopening, fee and reservation information before planning a trip. When open, the campground offers 21 single-family sites in total: 15 tent-only sites and six sites that can accommodate both tents and smaller RVs. Large RVs are not recommended and there are no electrical or water hookups. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; drinking water and accessible vault toilets are provided, and a portion of sites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The Clackamas River is the defining feature here and drives most of the recreation anglers come for winter steelhead, spring Chinook and late-summer Coho salmon, while paddlers and rafters use the river's bends and drops for everything from mellow floats to technical whitewater (the Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival takes place in May). A hiking route runs along the river corridor and originates at nearby Fish Creek Campground, which also has a boat ramp for easier water access, and the West Cascades Scenic Byway follows the river for scenic drives. North Fork Reservoir is a short drive northeast for additional boating options, and Estacada (about 10 miles away) provides food, fuel and supplies. Wildlife is abundant in the area bald eagles, northern spotted owls and occasional peregrine falcons are among the species that use this stretch of forest so pack for river recreation and variable forest conditions and confirm current access and facility status before you go.
