Doris Campground sits along the shore of Quanah Parker Lake within the 59,020-acre Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, a patch of mixed-grass prairie and ancient granite outcrops just west of the Lawton/Ft. Sill area. The campground contains 90 sites in all: 67 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 23 tent-only sites. Those sites are spread across Loops A through E (Loop A: 18 sites; Loop B: 10; Loop C: 14; Loop D: 10; Loop E: 15), plus three group sites and 20 semi-primitive walk-in (SP) tent sites. From your campsite you can launch a kayak or canoe, cast for bass on Quanah Parker Lake, or hop onto nearby trails such as Little Baldy; a short drive brings you to the Visitor Center, the summit road for Mt. Scott, and the prairie dog towns that concentrate wildlife viewing opportunities. The refuge supports a wide range of activities auto touring, boating, fishing, hiking, hunting during permitted seasons, interpretive programs, and year-round wildlife viewing so campers will often see bison, elk, prairie dogs, hawks and other native species when they leave the lantern at camp. Practical amenities are straightforward and campground-oriented: every site has a picnic table, fire ring and grill, roads through the campground are paved, and most sites are large enough for RVs and trailers; a dump station is available for RVs. Flush toilets and showers are provided in a centrally located shower/restroom complex within easy walking distance of many loops, but note that the group sites and Loops A and D are served only by chemical or vault toilets and have no water on-site; potable water is available at hydrants spaced throughout the campground. Access to the refuge is easy from I-44 (take Highway 49 west about 7 miles to the refuge gate, 14 miles to the Visitor Center) or from Highway 62 via Highway 115; for current fees, reservation rules, seasonal availability and any access restrictions, check the refuge website or contact the Visitor Center before you go.
