“Lovely outing, great campsites. We were focused on test-driving our bike-packing setups, so we didn't get to explore much further but would definitely like to go back! That said, the nearby museum of aeronautics is awesome!”
“Awesome time, there were a lot more mosquitos than we expected, plan accordingly ”

Floyd Bennett Field

Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn is one of the few campgrounds that puts a true outdoor escape within arm's reach of New York City. Spread through the woodland section of the former airfield, the site offers 44 campsites in total 12 for RVs and 32 for tents set among grasses and trees that buffer the sound of the city. The campground is open seasonally from April through October; ranger-led programs run throughout the summer and the site supports self-guided hiking, biking and birding right from the loop roads and paths around the field. On-site services are practical and straightforward: a dump station is available, generators are permitted only at the RV sites and then only during limited hours, and both tent and RV camping are accommodated. Public transit access is unusually good for a national park: take the Q35 bus to the Flatbush Avenue/Ryan Visitor Center stop and follow the pedestrian route east about a mile to the campground entrance, while drivers reach the park via Flatbush Avenue South and the Floyd Bennet Field entrance (RV check-in sits about a mile inside on the right). For up-to-date fees and reservation rules, check the National Park Service website or contact the park directly before you go. What makes Camp Gateway distinctive is how many different experiences sit within easy reach. The campground is part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a 27,000-acre mosaic that includes beaches, salt marshes, ponds, woodlands and grasslands; within a short drive or ride you can visit Civil War era forts, restored historic aircraft displays and Cold War Nike missile sites, or head to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to look for migratory birds the refuge reports about 300 species across the seasons. Water activities are plentiful in the broader park (boating, paddling and fishing are popular), and seasonal ferry service from nearby Riis Landing can take you toward Manhattan if you want a theater evening or a Statue of Liberty visit between outdoor days. Horseback riding, kayaking and archery are also noted options in the area, so plan a mix of local trails, waterfront time and historic touring when you stay.
