“I honestly can't review the campground because the 19 mile access road was in such bad shape, I turned around after about 5 miles. I haven't ever been on such an awfully gutted and bone jarring road. ”

Gallo Campground sits down in the lowland desert of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, pressed up against the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash. Campsites thread through a landscape of arroyos and sagebrush, with petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling and rock inscriptions nearby that reflect the long human presence in the canyon between roughly 850 and 1250 CE. The Visitor Center is about a mile from the campground and is where you must pay the park entrance fee (it is separate from any camping charge); it also has a staffed information desk, a 25-minute orientation film, a small bookstore and the schedule for guided tours, evening campfire talks and night-sky programs that help put the ruins and the dark desert sky in context. The area is remote: there are flush toilets at the campground but no showers, hookups, stores or cell service, and roads into Chaco include long stretches of unpaved travel from the north or a rough dirt approach from the south that can become impassable when wet. Bring plenty of water, food, sun protection and warm clothing, and call 505-786-7014 for current road conditions; also note that federal law prohibits possession or use of marijuana on park lands. The campground itself has 33 individual sites divided to suit a range of setups: 26 sites accommodate either tents or RVs, five are RV-only, and two are tent-only, plus two group sites intended for tents that can hold roughly 10 30 people. Each individual site includes a picnic table and a metal fire grate, and one site is designated as handicapped accessible; there are flush toilets in the restrooms but no showers. Several campsites were recently closed until next spring due to significant rock fall, so check availability and read the site details carefully before reserving. After checking in at the Visitor Center you can drive the canyon loop road and use frontcountry and backcountry hiking routes that lead directly to the ancient cultural sites hiking from the campground is the main daytime activity, with the interpretive programs and the clear night skies providing much of the learning and atmosphere once the sun sets.
