“Campsite was great. I felt like I was camping in the mountains but I was only 4 hours away from home.”
“Great place, good showers, nice trees, right near the river but those trains.....they roll through and honk their horns about every hour.....all night long.”

Bessey Recreation Complex sits along the Middle Loup River in Nebraska's Sandhills, a working mix of riparian corridor, shortgrass prairie and the rows of the Charles E. Bessey Nursery the Forest Service's oldest tree nursery that mark the Bessey Ranger District. The river alongside the campground is shallow with a steady current, which makes it well suited to tubing and canoeing, and a seven-acre stocked pond next to the sites supports family fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, trout and catfish from an accessible fishing pier. The campground contains 48 campsites in all: 33 sites set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and 15 tent-only sites, plus one group site; picnic tables, campfire rings and a group picnic area are provided throughout. You'll find seasonal flush toilets and drinking water on site, and electric hookups are available at the group site and several of the standard sites, so setups ranging from walk-in tent campers to families with trailers can be comfortably accommodated. Practical details matter here: campsites are managed first-come, first-serve and fees can be paid through the Recreation.gov app, so plan to have the app on your phone before arrival. The complex is in central/western Nebraska east of Thedford and roughly north of North Platte with services such as restaurants, a grocery and gas about 16 miles west in Thedford, another restaurant in Halsey, and a gas/grocery stop 10 miles east in Dunning. Beyond fishing and river play, the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands region around Bessey offers a range of outdoor options hiking, horse camping and horseback riding, hunting seasons, interpretive programs, RV access and abundant wildlife viewing (prairie chicken, sharp-tailed grouse, mule and white-tailed deer, pronghorn, prairie dogs, turkeys, coyotes and raptors are commonly seen). If you want a higher vantage point, plan a drive or hike up to the Scott Lookout Tower for wide views over the sandhills and prairie surrounding the recreation complex.
