Standing Indian Campground sits at 3,880 feet in the headwaters of the Nantahala River, surrounded by higher peaks that funnel a network of small streams through evergreen forests and rhododendron thickets. The campground has 79 sites suitable for both RVs and tents spread across four loops; sites are outfitted with campfire rings, grills, lantern posts and picnic tables, and most are within easy reach of drinking water, flush toilets and coin showers. A dump station is located nearby for RVs, and a group camping area called Kimsey Creek accommodates larger parties. Sites are available either first-come, first-served or by reservation, there are no premium pull-through sites, and nonelectric double sites are offered at $40 per night. Standing Indian Basin is a gateway to serious hiking several trailheads are right from the campground, including access to the Appalachian Trail making it an excellent base for day hikes or multi-day backpacking. Water recreation on the Nantahala River is close at hand: whitewater rafting, kayaking and trout fishing (North Carolina fishing license required) are popular downstream activities, and the surrounding National Forest supports hunting and a wide range of other outdoor pursuits such as biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, auto touring and rock climbing. The campground is about a 20-minute drive from Franklin, N.C.; you reach it via US-64 west of town and a short paved forest road off West Old Murphy Road, so it's reachable with typical passenger vehicles and tow rigs.
