Larry Creek Group Camp sits low in the Bass Creek Recreation Area of western Montana's Bitterroot National Forest, between Missoula and Hamilton and a short drive northwest of Stevensville via Highway 93 and Bass Creek Road/Forest Road 1316. The site is wooded with pine, spruce and fir and opens toward Bass Creek and nearby Bass Lake, so fishing is a major draw Bass Creek and several mountain streams provide plenty of holes to try. Non-motorized recreation is emphasized: a half-mile nature trail close to the campground highlights local plants and terrain, the longer 9-mile Bass Creek Trail heads south to a scenic overlook and additional fishing spots, and the campground itself includes an interpretive trail, a fitness trail and a volleyball court. Wildlife viewing is strong here; mule and white-tailed deer, elk, moose and many birds are commonly seen, and the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge about 20 miles along the Bitterroot River adds miles of viewing trails including an accessible 0.5-mile loop for additional birding and photography opportunities. The campground offers exactly 1 group campsite (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) that accommodates both RV and tent use (1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites). That single site is designed for groups: it can hold up to 75 people and 10 vehicles, and includes a picnic shelter, several tables, a large campfire circle, grills, accessible vault toilets and drinking water. Access is by a gravel forest road, and the adjacent parking area is small RVs are effectively limited to about 30 feet. Vehicles must remain on Forest Roads and in the designated parking area; off-road and motorized access to the meadow are not allowed. Because fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings can change, contact the Bitterroot National Forest office for current information before you go; the campground serves well as a base for local hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing, and for wider Bitterroot National Forest activities such as biking, boating, horseback riding and winter sports.
