“Just spent 3 peaceful, relaxing days camped on the lake. Kayaked, hiked and biked around the lake everyday. Came midweek and had my choice of walk in sites, campground was very quiet and well maintained. ”

Choctaw Lake Campground sits on the shore of a roughly 100-acre lake in the Tombigbee National Forest, about 5 miles south of Ackerman and roughly 20 miles southwest of Starkville. The loop of campsites 20 in all are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site comes with full utility hookups, a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and a number of sites are accessible. The day-use area beside the lake includes a swimming beach, individual and group picnic shelters, accessible flush toilets, showers and drinking water. A campground host is on site to assist visitors, but the location is otherwise unstaffed by a Forest Service office call the main number at (662) 285-3264 for general information. If you need more space for a gathering, Shelter GS1 rents for $40 for groups under 50 and $80 for groups over 50; any vehicle using a rented pavilion must also pay the $5 day-use vehicle fee (this includes the pavilion renter). Additional campsites beyond reservations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. The lake is the centerpiece for recreation here: anglers routinely catch largemouth bass, bream, catfish and crappie, and the water supports boating and swimming from the designated beach. Trails thread the shoreline and woods an accessible walking path circumnavigates the lake, while a steeper, three-mile trail that begins at the campground offers a moderate outing for hikers and mountain bikers. For longer rides or hikes, the Choctaw Lake area serves as a trailhead for the Noxubee Hills system, a 26-mile route rated moderate to experienced for biking and hiking (vault toilets are located at each end). Beyond the recreation area, the campground is handy to Natchez Trace Parkway access, the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge, French Camp and is within about 20 miles of Mississippi State University, making it a practical base for mixing lake time with regional sights and events.
