Lane Spring Recreation Area sits alongside Little Piney Creek in the northwestern part of Mark Twain National Forest, about 12 miles south of Rolla on U.S. Highway 63 with a short drive west on Entrance Road. The site centers on Lane Spring itself, where a shaded stone patio with accessible paths looks down on the bubbling spring fringed by watercress and native hardwoods sycamore, cypress and oaks among them. Several family campsites are tucked near the creek, some with direct waterfront access; each site is equipped with a picnic table, lantern post and a campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided, but specific numbers of campsites and any RV hookups are not listed in the available data, so expect a modest, rustic setup and check ahead if you need hookups or other amenities. A large picnic area contains two group pavilions that each hold up to 100 people, with tables, grills and electrical outlets; these pavilions can be reserved in advance, though if unreserved they operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Each pavilion has roughly 10 20 nearby parking spots with accessible routes to the structure, and there are additional parking spaces that give easier access to the spring and a nearby playground. Outdoor options concentrate on water and short trails rather than long backcountry routes. The stretch of Little Piney Creek by the spring is managed as a wild trout fishery: the population sustains itself rather than being stocked, only artificial lures and flies are allowed, and the daily limit is one trout measuring 18 inches or longer; bass and sunfish are also common. Two loop-style hikes the 1.25-mile Blossom Rock Trail and the 1.5-mile Cedar Bluff Trail move through lush bottomland plantings and wildflower patches before climbing to overlooks with rock outcrops and river views, making both good choices for birding and wildlife watching. The recreation area is well suited to day-use groups and families wanting picnics, short hikes, fishing or a quiet overnight stay; because campsite reservations are not listed and pavilion reservations are available, confirm current fees, seasonal access and any reservation rules with the Forest Service or the managing reservation site before you go.
