“Awesome place to stay. Historic and clean. Camp hosts were awesome folks. Quiet, plenty of room, awesome hiking.”
“Love the sites, walking opportunities and the dam museum artifacts. This site is a memorial site and educational if you're into that (overlook on hwy 65 at the rest stop has historical monuments). ”

Sandy Lake Dam and Recreation Area sits where Big Sandy Lake drains into the Sandy and Mississippi rivers, about 13 miles north of McGregor on Highway 65 in Minnesota's lake country. The dam structure on the outlet, part of the early Mississippi Headwaters reservoir system, dates to the late 19th century and the site still preserves its trading-post and lock-house history in a small, free museum near the dam. The campground occupies forested ground of mixed hardwoods and tall red and white pine, with the lake, river channels and wetlands close at hand; you'll find loons and bald eagles fishing the shallows, white-tailed deer and the occasional black bear in the woods, and seasonal wild rice beds along the shoreline. The dam divides the park into north and south sides with separate vehicle access roads (only pedestrians may cross the dam), and the area doubles as part of the historic canoe route that once linked the Mississippi to Lake Superior seasonal educational programs and visitor-center displays interpret that history for families and paddlers. The campground provides 61 total campsites: 51 sites suitable for both RVs and tents, nine tent-only sites and one glamping site, arranged across two primary loops (North: 34 sites; South: 26 sites). Sites throughout the park offer electrical hookups and there are group camping options and a camper cabin with bunk beds for those who want a roof but not a full RV setup; several walk-to primitive tent sites are also available. Facilities are full-service for a state recreation area: flush and vault restrooms, showers, drinking water, laundry and a dump station, two lake boat ramps and one river ramp, docks, a fishing pier, a public beach (the only public beach on Big Sandy Lake), playgrounds and a short hiking trail. Practical access details are posted at the entrance follow South Entrance signs for campsites 1 21, tent sites 1 4 and the south group site, and North Entrance signs for campsites 22 49, tent sites 5 8, the north group site and the camper cabin and if you need help finding your site you can head to the South Entrance campground office. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal availability, check the park's official site or contact the campground office before you go.
