AuSable River Dispersed Camping stretches along a 55-mile reach of the AuSable River in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, between the river access at 4001 Bridge (about 7 miles northwest of Glennie) and the Whirlpool access a few miles west of Oscoda. The system contains 101 individually designated single-family campsites, arranged into nine sections that follow the river corridor: Alcona Pond (7 sites), AuSable Semi-Primitive North (8), AuSable Semi-Primitive South (5), Cooke Pond (26), Five Channels Pond (4), Foote Pond (24), Loud Pond (7), Lower AuSable (5) and Sawmill Point (15). Sites sit on bluffs ranging from roughly 5 to 300 feet above the waterline, so some camps offer sweeping valley views while others are tucked into tighter river bends; steep or eroding slopes mean river access can be difficult from certain sites. The campground supports a mix of camping styles 40 boat-in sites, 46 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, and 15 tent-only sites and boat-in camping is explicitly allowed; canoe rentals are available in nearby Glennie, Hale, Mio and Oscoda for those who prefer to paddle in. Facilities are primitive: there is no potable water, no toilets, and no trash removal at any site, and parking aprons are dirt or gravel, so plan to bring your own water, portable toilets, and garbage bags. Recreational opportunities on site center on river activities fly fishing, canoeing, and swimming with perch, bass, pike and walleye available in the river and nearby lakes (Whirlpool Angler access is a recommended fishing spot). The River Road National Scenic Byway runs close to many sites, providing easy auto-touring and scenic pullouts, and the broader Huron-Manistee National Forests offer a wide range of activities from hiking, biking and wildlife viewing to horseback riding, OHV use, interpretive programs and water sports. Because fees, seasonal openings and reservation rules can change, check the Forest Service recreation page for current information before you go; otherwise treat these sites as rustic, single-family camps meant for self-sufficient, low-impact camping along one of Michigan's most storied trout rivers.
