“Absolutely, beautiful campground, very easy access to the beach and good hiking! Clean, flush toilets The host was exceptionally friendly and kind, giving us information to make her stay more enjoyable!”
“Great hikes around campground, nice walk to the beach. The sites are pretty close to each other, but this time it was great because the park was almost empty. ”

Lake Michigan at Manistee sits on the forested eastern shore of Lake Michigan about 15 miles south of the city of Manistee, reached by US-31 and Forest Trail Road (FS 5629). The campground is arranged in three loops OAK and ORCHID each contain 25 sites and a separate GROU loop holds three group sites for a total of 53 campsites. Fifty-two of those sites accommodate both RVs and tents; one site is tent-only. Campsites come with picnic tables and pedestal grills, and the recreation area includes both flush and vault toilets, a playground for younger campers, beach access with an overlook deck, and an amphitheater that runs interpretive programs during the peak season. Group sites can host up to 50 people and carry a nightly fee of $55 for groups up to 25 occupants and $72 for 26 50 occupants; check with the Huron-Manistee National Forest office or the recreation reservation website for current seasonal opening dates and reservation policies before you go. The setting shifts quickly from hardwood forest to a broad sandy beach on Lake Michigan, with Porter Creek nearby and Hamlin Lake to the south. Water recreation is a primary draw here swimmers and kayakers will find a sandy shoreline and an overlook that makes for easy access to the lake, while anglers come for trout fishing in Lake Michigan's nearshore waters. Short, local trails include the Arrowhead Trail, a Boy Scout built loop linking the campground to the beach, and a trailhead within the recreation area provides access to the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area for longer hikes and backpacking. Birdwatchers should watch for shoreline and early-successional species such as piping plover and prairie warbler, and the broader Huron-Manistee National Forests offer a wide range of outdoor opportunities from biking and auto touring to horseback riding, OHV routes, and interpretive programs across nearly one million acres of public land.
