“Enjoyed the C&O trail nearby for biking. Campsites seemed more spacious than a typical campground. ”
“The experience on site is excellent. The site is beautiful and very clean. However, the train that passed twice during the night was rather loud! Be aware!”
“The location is pretty and they have a very nice hiking trail. However, we did not realize that there are very loud trains that pass through on both sides of the Potomac into the night, so you can't get decent sleep.”

McCoys Ferry Campground sits at Mile 110.4 on the C&O Canal Towpath along the Maryland side of the Potomac, between Big Pool and Big Spring in the rolling mountains of Western Maryland. The site is reached via McCoys Ferry Road off MD 56 an approach that passes through a low tunnel and ends at the campground, so drivers should note the tunnel's 10' 3" vehicle-height limit. There are a total of 13 campsites here, and all 13 are configured to serve both RVs and tents; individual drive-in sites are sized to handle very small fifth-wheels, travel trailers, pop-outs or RVs up to 20' in length. Twelve single campsites each provide a picnic table, fire ring and grill and can host up to eight people, while the single group site holds up to 30 people, offers four picnic tables plus a grill and fire pit, and has room for two vehicles and a small trailer or support vehicle under 20'. Practical amenities are straightforward: protected pit toilets and accessible portable toilets are on-site, potable water is available from a hand pump seasonally from April 15 through November 1, and parking is allowed in the drive-in campsites or the adjacent lot note that motor vehicles are not permitted on the towpath itself. The campground's most-used draws are water-based: a boat ramp provides direct access to the Potomac River for kayakers, paddlers and anglers, and fishing requires a Maryland license for anyone 16 or older. Beyond the river, the C&O Canal National Historical Park opens up opportunities for biking, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing along the towpath and surrounding trails, while nearby Fort Frederick State Park a rare pre-Revolution stone fort dating to the French & Indian War offers living-history programming on summer weekends. Reservation and cancellation policies are specific: cancellations made more than two days before arrival incur a $10 cancellation fee; canceling the day before or on the day of arrival for an individual campsite will cost a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount paid). Group facility cancellations less than 14 days before arrival also incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee, and group day-use cancellations within 14 days forfeit the total day-use fee.
