Beaver Dam Campground sits along the north shore of Upper Caney Lake, offering campsites among woods, low hills and lakeside shorelines at about 160 feet elevation. The recreation focus here is on the water: the 125-acre Upper Caney Lake is used for swimming, boating, fishing and water skiing, and anglers can expect bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill and sandbass. A short walk from the loop brings you to the Sugar Cane National Recreation Trail, which runs 5.7 miles past the campground (with the 2-mile Lost Man Loop nearby); both routes welcome hikers and mountain bikers and pass through terrain shaped by the region's former sugar-cane and cotton agriculture. The campground's group picnic area sits closer to Lower Caney Lake (about 250 acres) and can handle larger gatherings, while the surrounding Kisatchie National Forest Louisiana's only national forest includes bayous, bald cypress groves and stretches of old-growth pine across its 604,000 acres, so wildlife viewing and broader forest recreation are easy to combine with a stay here. Practical amenities are straightforward and oriented to mixed RV and tent use: Beaver Dam has 27 campsites in total, and every site is configured for both RV and tent camping, with electric and water hookups at each location; a sanitary dump station, drinking water and flush toilets are also provided. Each campsite can accommodate up to eight campers, and the group picnic area can hold up to 200 guests. The campground lies north of Minden reached from LA-159 onto Caney Lake Road (Webster Parish Road 111) and a short drive into the recreation area and supports typical park activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking and biking at the site, while the broader forest offers auto touring, horseback riding, OHV trails and hunting in designated areas. Specifics on fees, reservations and seasonal openings are set by the Forest Service; contact the Caney Lakes Recreation Complex or Kisatchie National Forest for current rates and reservation procedures before you go.
