Hardin Ridge sits along the wooded shores of Lake Monroe inside Hoosier National Forest, a rolling-hills landscape of hardwoods where dogwoods and redbuds brighten spring and the canopy turns vivid in autumn. The recreation complex spreads across roughly 1,200 acres and centers on a 300-foot sand-and-grass swimming beach set beneath a shady hillside; the beach has no lifeguards and prohibits glass containers and pets. Water-based access is a strong feature here: a three-lane boat launch is open year-round with room for 75 vehicle/trailers and a fully accessible loading dock, and anglers can fish anywhere along the shoreline quiet inlets often hold bluegill, striped bass, largemouth bass and crappie. On land, a two-mile Hardin Ridge Trail follows the main campground road and provides a safe, scenic surface for hiking and biking plus a lookout over the lake, while the 1.2-mile Ted T. Turtle interpretive trail winds through hardwoods and along a creek with signs about local history, geology and wildlife. Picnic areas include multiple tables and three shelter houses (two overlooking the lake, two with electricity and lights); if not reserved those shelters may be used first-come, first-served and the surrounding fields are large enough for games and informal sports. For overnight visitors, the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area contains 195 campsites in a variety of formats: 139 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, 16 are RV-only sites, 38 are tent-only, and there are 2 glamping sites. Four named loops are part of the layout (CABI: 2 sites; EADS: 22 sites; PINE: 29 sites; WOAK: 16 sites). Utilities are concentrated rather than scattered about half the sites in most loops have electric hookups, with the exception of the Eads and Southern Point loops; walk-in tent sites do not have electric service. Centralized water, flush toilets and showers are provided for campers. Two primitive cabins are available for rent on the lakeshore between the boat launch and the beach; each cabin sleeps seven (six bunks, one double) and shares a nearby picnic shelter and toilet, and a $75 cleaning/damage deposit is collected on arrival. Vehicle and reservation policies are straightforward: a single campsite fee includes one vehicle (single site) or two vehicles (double site); there is a $5-per-day charge for a second vehicle and $5 per day for any additional vehicle, with limits of two vehicles on single sites and four on double sites. Beyond Hardin Ridge itself, Hoosier National Forest supports a wide range of activities boating, hiking, fishing, biking, interpretive programs, wildlife viewing and more and nearby points of interest include historic and natural sites such as Brooks Cabin, Buffalo Trace and the Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower. The recreation area is reached from SR 446 and Chapel Hill Road in the hills southeast of Bloomington and east of Bedford.
