Salt Springs Recreation Area sits in the heart of Ocala National Forest between the St. Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers, roughly 35 miles east of Ocala and within day-trip distance of Daytona Beach (about 60 miles west) and Orlando (about 95 miles north). The site's signature feature is a natural mineral spring that bubbles up from cracks deep beneath the forest floor; dissolved potassium, magnesium and sodium give the water a faint salinity that explains the name and makes the spring an appealing spot for swimming and snorkeling. The surrounding landscape reflects the forest's semi-tropical character a mix of pines and palms, shady campsites, and understory greenery and the recreation area borders Lake George and several ducky waterways, so boating and paddling are convenient from the on-site boat ramp and marina. Anglers will find good fishing on Salt Springs Run downstream from the swimming area, and land-based recreation includes access to the Bear Swamp Trail and a stretch of the 1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail; there are also basketball courts and a horseshoe pit near the day-use zones. The campground itself is the largest in Ocala National Forest and the only one in the forest that offers full hookups for RVs. In total there are 158 sites: 106 sites designed to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 52 tent-only sites set a short walk from the parking area; sites are described as spacious, nicely shaded, and located away from the busy day-use facilities. RV travelers will appreciate the hookups and room to maneuver, while tent campers can choose the quieter tent loop. Nearby in the small community of Salt Springs you'll find practical services a gas station, grocery, restaurants, bait and tackle shops, a post office, a laundromat and the visitor center for supplies and local information. Specific fee, reservation and seasonal availability details aren't listed here, so plan to check the Forest Service or the Salt Springs visitor center for up-to-date information on reservations, camping fees and any access notices before you go.
