West Thompson Lake Campground sits along the wooded shoreline of its 200-acre lake in northeastern Connecticut, just outside Thompson Center and a short drive from I-395. The campground is seasonal and contains 24 campsites in total 22 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and two tent-only sites plus two Adirondack lean-to shelters. Some sites offer water and electric hookups, and the loop includes accessible flush toilets and hot showers, a dump station, and interpretive trails that wind through stands of Eastern white pine, Northern red oak and shagbark hickory. An amphitheater, playground and basketball court provide on-site daytime activities, while an overlook at the dam gives clear lake-and-forest views for photographers and sightseers. Note practical details before you arrive: the entrance gate is closed from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., fees apply for certain facilities, and reservations are recommended. The lake is a working recreation area: a boat ramp near the campground gives easy access for boating, kayaking and canoeing, and the water supports a healthy warm-water fishery bass and panfish are common targets for anglers. Paddlers can also follow the Thompson Section of the Quinebaug River Water Trail, a leisurely roughly three-hour stretch of moving water with no portages or rapids that threads through wildlife habitat. On shore, an 18-hole disc golf course runs along the lakeshore and is free to use; picnicking, environmental-education programs, wildlife viewing and playground activities are available at the site. Seasonal uses include deer hunting during regulated seasons and snowmobile use in winter. Because some facilities require fees and seasonal rules change, call (860) 923-2982 for up-to-date information and to make reservations.
