Alvarado Campground sits at about 9,000 feet on the flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, surrounded by stands of ponderosa pine, aspen, lodgepole and gambel oak. The setting is a working mountain landscape: some sites look down into the Wet Mountain Valley, others sit beside Alvarado Creek, and trails fan out from the campground into increasingly rugged country. Hikers and horse riders can follow the non-motorized Comanche and Venable Trails into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness a 226,455-acre area that contains roughly 60 alpine lakes, 400 miles of streams and more than 400 miles of trail while the nearby Rainbow Trail is a popular route for ATVs and motorcycles. Waterfalls, high-elevation lakes and scenic overlooks are reachable on a mix of easy and challenging hikes, and the campground's proximity to the Frontier Pathways Byway makes it a convenient base for exploring local mining and mountain-history sites. The campground itself is arranged in three distinct areas to accommodate different styles of camping: a lower loop for tents and RVs, an upper area set up for walk-in tent campers, and a middle section that serves equestrian visitors (there are no permanent corrals, but plenty of room for portable corrals). In total there are 50 sites 41 are configured for both RVs and tents, five are tent-only, one is RV-only, and three are designated equestrian sites. Practical details matter here: parking aprons are dirt and gravel, and tent pads and lantern posts are provided only in the lower campsites. Roads to the campground leave State Route 69 south of Westcliffe and continue on well-marked forest roads, including stretches of dirt and gravel; the drive is short but expect slower speeds on the unpaved sections. An extra vehicle fee is $8.00. Reservations and cancellations follow the standard Recreation.gov rules: cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; canceling the day before or the day of arrival carries a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee; one-night reservations forfeited in full if canceled; no-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus the first night's charges. Refund requests must be submitted within seven days after your reservation ends; card refunds go back to the original account while cash or check refunds are issued by Treasury check. Finally, UAS (drone) use is regulated on national forest lands check Forest Service UAS guidance and local rules before flying.
