“Beautiful and comfortable group site. We had about seven people and were able to spread out. We had a great time. ”
“Each time I come to Penitente, I find some magic. The place is sacred and meditative. This time it poured furiously, but provided exceptional views of the Sangres with low lying clouds, and double or triple rainbows everywhere.”

Penitente Canyon Campground sits at about 7,930 feet in a rugged stretch of canyon country reached by a short drive west off U.S. 285 through La Garita the turnoff and route are signed and the improved access is gravel rather than paved. The canyon is a magnet for technical climbers: the Recreation Area contains nearly 300 technical rock routes, many of them south-facing and climbable through the winter, while a network of singletrack and multiuse trails threads the cliffs and benches for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. La Garita Creek runs through the area and supports trout fishing; the landscape also carries deep human history, with evidence of Ute, Jicarilla Apache and Puebloan use and scattered painted rock art that visitors are asked to leave undisturbed. Cell service is spotty down in the canyon, so plan on limited connectivity while you're in the walls or on the trails. The developed campground provides 17 sites in total: 12 sites that can accommodate both RVs and tents and 5 tent-only sites, all non-electric. Sites come with typical backcountry comforts a table, tent pad, fire ring and a food-storage locker and the area is supported by five vault toilets, trash receptacles, interpretive signs, trailhead and overflow parking; a public drinking water system is available seasonally from May through October. Roads and parking within the recreation area are gravel, facilities remain open year-round, and stays are limited to 14 days. Individual campsites are $11 per night; group tent areas (where provided in the recreation area) are $20 per night. For up-to-date details, reservations or questions about group use and seasonal services, contact the San Luis Valley Field Office; nearby services for supplies and fuel are available at the La Garita Trading Post and the town of Del Norte.
