Crow Valley Recreation Area sits on the shortgrass prairie of the Pawnee National Grassland at about 4,800 feet, where cottonwood and elm trees provide most of the shade concentrated in the family campground and the surrounding landscape opens into windswept grassland and eroded creek drainages. The developed recreation area is compact but varied: there are family sites with a picnic table and campfire ring, three reservable group overnight sites (Hawk, Plover and Lark) arranged with a common campfire circle and tent pads around a shared area and adjacent parking, a large group picnic area with a lighted covered shelter (31 tables and a large barbecue grill) that can handle up to 200 day-users, and the Steward J. Adams Educational Site a three-sided, accessible shelter with outlets and tables that can serve up to 100 people for day or overnight use. Vault toilets and drinking water are available on site, and the data for campers to note is clear: TOTAL CAMPSITES: 14, SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 14 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites. Group overnight sites can be reserved separately or together; the family sites' reservation policy isn't specified here, so check current Forest Service listings before you go. Outdoor activity around Crow Valley emphasizes wildlife and wide-open-sky experiences: more than 200 bird species have been recorded in this area, making it a strong draw for birders, and the flat horizon and low light pollution make star gazing popular after dark. Within the recreation area you'll find short nature trails, a volleyball court, horseshoe pit and a ball field, plus the Lee and Dorothy Rhoads Farm Implement Museum, where homestead tools and implements give a sense of pioneer life. The campground is also a practical base for exploring the rest of Pawnee National Grassland and the Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic Byway, a 128-mile route that passes near the Pawnee Buttes; the broader Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests / Pawnee NG region supports many other pursuits including auto touring, biking, hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting, OHV use and winter sports. Group Site Fees: 30 person Overnight Group Sites = $55. Picnic / Day Use Group site = $60 for up to 50 persons, $121 for 51-100 persons, $182 for 101 -150 persons, $182 for 151 - 200 persons, and $242 for 151-200 persons. Steward Adams EDU site of $72 for 1 - 50 persons or $145 for 51 - 100 persons. To reach Crow Valley from Ault, head east on Colorado State Highway 14 and then take a short north turn onto Weld County Road 77.
