“Too much litter around the lake Otherwise it was very pleasant ”
“The campgrounds were great and the camp host was super nice and helpful. The lake was a little low and muddy, but we made the best of it and had a great time! ”

1160 LAKE MENDOCINO DR
Open in Google Maps ↗
Kyen Campground and the adjacent Oak Grove Day-Use Area sit on the shores of Lake Mendocino in the Mendocino Range, where the rolling Coyote Valley hills give way to stands of oak, manzanita and scattered pines. The developed campground is relatively small 31 total campsites in all configured as 19 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 11 RV-only sites and a single tent-only site most within an easy walk of the water. Facilities are straightforward and practical: a mix of flush and vault toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station and a boat ramp for launching into the 1,822-acre lake. Oak Grove's day-use footprint includes four group picnic shelters (two with electrical hookups) and several family picnic shelters available on a first-come, first-served basis, making it convenient for both overnight stays and larger daytime gatherings. The campground sits less than a 15-minute drive from Ukiah, so groceries, dining and the seasonal farmers' market are within easy reach. Recreation at Kyen centers on the lake and the trails that skirt it. The reservoir formed by Coyote Dam on the Russian River supports boating, water skiing, swimming and a full range of angling opportunities (sunfish, smallmouth and striped bass, crappie, white and channel catfish, bluegill and perch are commonly caught). Several miles of multiuse trails wind around the shoreline; the 3-mile Shakota Trail starts at the Pomo Cultural Center inside the campground and offers open views across the water and chances to see local wildlife. The site also supports environmental-education programming, a visitor center feel, playground spaces and seasonal wildlife viewing; winter sports can occur when conditions permit. Practical note: shade is limited under the oak stands, so expect sun exposure on hotter days and bring layers for cool evenings; check the park website or Recreation.gov for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal access advisories before you go.
