Furnace Creek Campground sits on the valley floor of Death Valley, about a half-mile north of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center on State Highway 190, where the landscape is open and vegetation is sparse; a few campsites have trees for shade but most are exposed, offering wide views of the surrounding mountain ranges that take on warm tones at sunrise and sunset. The facility contains 130 campsites in total: a drive-in loop with 91 sites and a tent walk-in loop with 39 sites. Of the 130 sites, 79 are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents while 51 are tent-only. Sites are serviced with drinking water, picnic tables, flush toilets and a dump station, and each site includes either a campfire ring or grill; the tent walk-in area is generator-free and campers using those walk-in sites are not permitted to sleep in vehicles. From the campground it's an easy walk to the Visitor Center and museum exhibits, and a one-mile bike path leads to the Harmony Borax Works; the location also makes Furnace Creek a practical base for auto touring, biking, hiking, wildlife viewing and visiting historic and cultural sites across the park. Furnace Creek is the only National Park Service campground in Death Valley that accepts advance reservations, and the reservation season runs October 15 through April 15 advance bookings are strongly recommended during that window because first-come, first-served sites are rare and fill quickly on weekends, holidays and the fringes of the reservation season. The campground kiosk and staff are on site seven days a week during the reservation season (call (760) 786-2441 then); from April 16 to October 14 the location is unstaffed and general park information is available at (760) 786-3200. Note that Recreation.gov does not reflect first-come availability in real time; reservation changes and cancellations carry a $10 service fee and late cancellations or same-day cancellations typically forfeit the first night's fee, while no-shows incur a $20 service fee plus loss of the first night's use fee. An entrance fee or park pass is required in addition to campground charges (digital passes can be purchased through Recreation.gov), and because much of Death Valley's interior requires high-clearance or 4WD to reach, most popular sights near Furnace Creek are chosen for their paved access and ease of day trips from the campground.
