Bonita Canyon Campground sits inside Chiricahua National Monument's stand of pine and oak, where most campsites are shaded and sit along the dry channel of Bonita Creek. The campground is an easy base for exploring the monument's 8-mile paved scenic drive (which ends at Massai Point) and roughly 17 miles of day-use trails that thread among the rock columns and hoodoos that draw birders and photographers. Plan on driving about 45 minutes southeast from Willcox or roughly two hours southeast of Tucson via AZ-186 and AZ-181; the campground is about 2.5 miles inside the park on the left. Note that backcountry camping is not allowed inside the monument, the visitor center is open 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. MST most days (closed Thanksgiving and Dec 25), and the surrounding Coronado National Forest offers additional dispersed or developed campground options for visitors who need more space or different facilities. The campground has 23 sites in total: 22 sites that will accommodate both an RV and tents and one tent-only site. There are no utility hookups, no dump station in the park (the nearest is in Willcox), and the park prohibits filling RV or trailer water tanks even though potable drinking-water faucets are provided; restrooms have flush toilets and cold-water sinks but no showers. Each individual campsite allows up to 8 people, 2 vehicles, and 2 tents, and all vehicles must be parked within the site driveway parking along road shoulders or overnight parking elsewhere in the monument is not permitted. Only a few sites will actually fit longer vehicles: the combined vehicle+trailer or RV length limit is 29 ft (9 m) for campsite accommodation, and vehicles or RVs longer than 24 ft are not permitted on the scenic drive beyond the campground; trailers are not allowed on the scenic drive. Many sites are narrow, some are awkward to back into because of sharp angles, and crossing the two creek-bed dips can be challenging for longer rigs, so verify site length before you book. Amenities at each site include a picnic table, a raised grill, a food-storage box and a tent pad; bring your own firewood or charcoal (use of raised portable fire pans is allowed). Site #8 is reserved for accessibility needs and offers an electrical connection only for medical equipment. Quiet hours run from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. with no generator use, hammocks and hanging from trees are prohibited, and there is a group tent site available for groups of 8 24 people (fee ranges from $24 to $72 per night). For current fees, reservations and the campground map and regulations, consult the Chiricahua National Monument website before your trip.
