Upper Arcadia sits high on the Swift Trail Scenic Drive in the Pinaleño Range, offering a cooler high-desert camp experience at about 6,700 feet amid tall ponderosa pines with pockets of Gambel oak and Arizona walnut. The campground is a good base for hiking, birding and wildlife watching because the Swift Trail climbs from the Sonoran Desert into alpine meadows, creating a range of habitats close at hand. The Arcadia Trail #328 begins at the campground and climbs toward Shannon Campground, with a one-mile spur up to Heliograph Peak; the Swift Trail also provides access to other trails, Riggs Lake (stocked with trout by Arizona Game & Fish), and the Columbine Visitor Center. Mount Graham and its wilderness study area loom nearby for longer outings, and the town of Safford about a 30-minute drive north on SR 191 houses the district ranger station (open Monday Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.) if you need maps or local information. The site itself is small but well-equipped: there are two reservable campsites, each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and a separate group camping area that can take up to 75 people. Amenities include seasonal drinking water, vault toilets, picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, and bear-proof food lockers and trash cans; you may collect dead-and-down firewood in and around the campsite. A few additional first-come, first-served sites are nearby (fees apply separately). Fees for the reservable sites are $25 per night plus a $5 per vehicle per night fee; note that recreation.gov charges only the nightly/daily rate online, and the $5 per-vehicle fee must be paid by cash or check at the campground fee station. For reservation rules and cancellation policies, consult the Rules & Reservations page on recreation.gov before you go.
